THE WASHINGTON POST

“Democracy Dies in Darkness”

Super Bowl Commercial

Background: Following the murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul, Jeff Bezos donated a Super Bowl commercial placement to The Washington Post to share a message about the importance of press freedom and the sacrifices reporters make every day to uncover the story.

Challenge: We had four days to edit together a spot and ship it to the NFL for review the Friday before the Super Bowl. To add to the pressure, we had Tom Hanks lined up to record the voice-over for the spot.

Execution: A simple, hard-hitting commercial that could be pulled together from existing footage of journalists and the news without running into copyright issues. I spent all waking moments in the edit room: helping with last-minute script revisions, searching for stock footage, and researching fallen journalists. I worked on digital ads and cut-downs following the game.
